Background

Paula L. Frederick, Senior Art Director & Designer

My approach

As a senior hands-on designer and art director with 15+ years of experience, I love bringing ideas to life that both resonate with human beings and deliver business results. As Herb Kelleher, longtime successful CEO of Southwest Airlines, put it: “Business is people.”

My work spans packaging, branding, and digital spaces, bringing together visual systems, content, and user experience so that they make sense in the real world. Whether it is on a physical retail shelf, a digital screen, or an e-commerce platform, I focus on constructing visual solutions that are clear. And effective.

Known across organizations for bringing a relentlessly positive approach and deep curiosity to complex design challenges, I love collaborating across departments, roles, and countries. I drive results by balancing consumer insight with business goals: asking thoughtful questions, listening carefully to stakeholder needs, and using testing data to deliver visual solutions that resonate with the intended audience. I bring extensive experience working in high-stakes stakeholder environments, regulated industries, and global distributed teams. All while keeping visuals sharp and purposeful.

Paula L. Frederick is an award-winning art director, graphic designer, and illustrator experienced in creating and designing for American, European, and Asian markets. Throughout a successful design career, Frederick has created visual solutions that touch worldwide audiences. You may have seen her work on shelves at your local CVS pharmacy in the US, at the Beijing Automotive Show, on multilingual websites for Fortune 500 companies, or in the book Design Funny: A Graphic Designer’s Guide to Humor by Heather Bradley. Or even folk music CDs released by Wepecket Island Records.

Frederick’s career kicked off when she hired on to animate interactive versions of bestselling children’s entertainment at Media Station (Ann Arbor, Michigan). There, she art directed Shari Lewis’ Lamb Chop Loves Music, an educational title that the Music Educators National Conference called “a must!” She also animated children’s games for Disney’s blockbuster The Lion King and two bestselling children’s books: If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond, and William Joyce’s George Shrinks. (That includes personally animating all mouse antics in the kitchen refrigerator scene.)

Frederick then joined the web design agency startup Fry (Ann Arbor, MI and Boston, MA), now owned by Oracle, and was quickly promoted to Senior Art Director and Creative Services Manager as Fry grew. She designed highly visible business-to-consumer (B2C) interactive experiences and oversaw the creative department. Fry grew into one of the top web firms in the world according to Forrester Research. During this time she designed and led creative teams on high-profile websites including PBS, Staples, and Domino’s, and co-designed eZiba, an online global bazaar Time Magazine called, “one of the best sites on the web.”

When Frederick transitioned to freelance design and illustration, she successfully designed interactive, print, and brand identities for a wide variety of clients including Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, OneBeacon Insurance, the Museum of Bad Art (MoBA), and regional non-profits.

Alongside her independent client work, Frederick served in a unique long-term capacity as the sole in-house graphic design consultant for a division of Texas Instruments (Attleboro, MA global HQ). When it spun off as Sensata Technologies, a multi-billion-dollar maker of highly engineered sensors, Frederick stayed on as senior graphic design and digital consultant, remaining their only designer at global HQ. Highlights from over 15 years of working with TI and Sensata include collaborating with engineers, managers, and business leaders worldwide to design across a broad spectrum: multi-language websites and portals (with hand-coded HTML/CSS), global internal communications, oversized event graphics, and print and online advertising. She was also the sole designer of important shareholder communications, including yearly events, annual report covers, infographics, and presentations, alongside branding for their new mergers and acquisitions (M&A) group.

Most recently, Frederick served as the first art director hired for the Americas at Nelsons (North Andover, MA), the UK’s oldest manufacturer of natural healthcare and wellness products (London HQ), and maker of Rescue Remedy and Bach Original Flower Remedies brand products. As the only designer covering North America, she owned and executed 100% of regional design output. Her hands-on execution spanned consumer packaged goods (CPG), new product development (NPD), advertising, trade show and event graphics, social media assets, sales collateral, information graphics, PowerPoint presentations, learning management system (LMS) courses, and website CMS design for US and Canada. In one year alone, Frederick designed packaging for 80+ new consumer products (160+ pieces) launched to market in the US and Canada.

Paula Frederick graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in graphic design, where she also completed a year-long campus design internship. Committed to continuous learning and modern design practices, she holds AI professional certifications from Google and Adobe.

She lives in the lovely seaside town of Duxbury, Massachusetts, USA and enjoys painting, comedy, animals, and the outdoors.

I am currently seeking full-time, remote opportunities with mission-driven, ethical brands, with a focus on hands-on design and creative direction rather than people management. Let’s connect >
